The education system is layered, complex, and hard to change

California’s education system is big and complex. It has to be. It serves millions of students, and employs hundreds of thousands of teachers and staff, most represented by unions. It operates in layers of governance and oversight from local Schoolsite Councils to boards at the district, county, state, and federal level. Voters play a powerful role in California’s education system, too.

This chapter of Ed100 unpacks the system, layer by layer, explaining how it works and what happens when it doesn’t.

At the end of each lesson, please take the quiz. It reinforces what you’re learning and advances you toward your certificate as an Ed100 Graduate.
