Happy Independence Day!

The 4th of July is about more than fireworks and hotdogs and parades large and small. It is a reminder of our values as a nation and our responsibility to pass those values on to each new generation.

How do we do this? Education. Universal, free public education.

This is not a new idea.

  • "Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education." - Franklin Roosevelt
  • "Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife." - John Dewey
  • "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

Democracy and Education

The close link between democracy and education is not a new idea, but the idea that it is for everyone isn't all that old, either. As parents and teachers and community leaders, we know it is an idea worth celebrating not just on our nation’s birthday but in what we do every day.

So pass the mustard, enjoy the parade, and maybe take a few moments over the summer to learn more about democracy and education.

And yes, we have a few quick readings in Ed100 to get you started:

Here's a bit more to share with the kids from Kids.gov.
