The 4th of July is about more than fireworks and hotdogs and parades large and small. It is a reminder of our values as a nation and our responsibility to pass those values on to each new generation.
How do we do this? Education. Universal, free public education.
This is not a new idea.
The close link between democracy and education is not a new idea, but the idea that it is for everyone isn't all that old, either. As parents and teachers and community leaders, we know it is an idea worth celebrating not just on our nation’s birthday but in what we do every day.
So pass the mustard, enjoy the parade, and maybe take a few moments over the summer to learn more about democracy and education.
