How Ed100 shaped my PTA leadership

Welcome ashore

When my first child started kindergarten, I assumed that my background as a classroom teacher had fully prepared me to navigate the uncharted waters of the education system. I quickly realized I was wrong. The challenges I faced as a parent exposed gaps in my understanding. I felt unexpectedly adrift. I pondered:

  • “Why can’t the principal make this decision?”
  • “Why isn’t the district covering this cost?”
  • “Is this the PTA’s responsibility?”
  • “What exactly is an LCAP?”
  • “What do all these acronyms mean—SSC, LEA?”
  • “What role do I play in all of this?”

When our PTA President suggested we take a free online course called Ed100 to earn tickets in a drawing for a chance to win money for our unit, I initially viewed it as just another task on my already busy mom’s to-do list. However, as I delved in, one lesson a day, I was shocked to discover how much I didn't know. It was a profound journey of shock, curiosity, frustration, and ultimately, hope. The punchline of Ed100 isn't a secret — It's highlighted in the first lesson of the first chapter: “There is no independent watchdog in the system. You are it.” (Lesson 1.1 — California Context).

"There is no independent watchdog. You are it."

This insight transformed my perspective. Since then, I’ve actively participated in my children’s Schoolsite Council, supported various PTA unit chairs, and engaged in district committees such as DEI, PAC+ (our LCAP Committee), and the Superintendent and Parent Roundtable. I’ve also spoken up at numerous school board meetings and events.

The impact of Ed100 was so significant that when a position opened up on the Ed100 team, I eagerly applied. I wanted to be part of amplifying its mission.

I’m not alone in my appreciation for how Ed100 can help school communities engage parents, educators, and student leaders. For the last year I've been meeting fellow-travelers on this journey.

Interview with Dr. Mobasher

For example, Dr. Azin Mobasher leads one of the largest PTA organizations in California. With a PhD in Virology, she has been involved in the PTA since 2011, when her children were in elementary and middle school. She began at the unit (school) level, then got involved at the council (community) level, and now serves as the president of California's 23rd District PTA, spanning Riverside County.

Dr. Azin Mobasher

Dr. Azin Mobasher, an Ed100 Graduate, serves about 250 school communities spanning Riverside County as President of California's 23rd District PTA.

I asked her how Ed100 has shaped her journey as a leader. Here are some highlights from our conversation:

How did you discover Ed100?

I learned about Ed100 from a campaign advisor while running for a school district position. I was advised that Ed100 would provide a solid foundation in the education system. Intrigued, I began the course about 4-5 years ago.

What was your experience with the school board?

Although I had never considered joining the school board before, I found a dedication to education made it a worthwhile endeavor. I don’t consider myself a political person, I just really wanted to have an impact on education issues.

How has Ed100 helped you as a parent and PTA leader?

I wish I had known about Ed100 earlier in my PTA journey. The course would have significantly improved my understanding of the education system and helped me better engage with parents. For instance, I appreciate how Ed100 simplifies complex concepts like the LCAP [Local Accountability Plan], making it easier to communicate and involve parents.

How has Ed100 enhanced your leadership?

Ed100 has helped me in many ways. For example, Ed100 is very clear about where funding comes from and how it’s used, which is crucial for effective advocacy. Ed100’s unbiased, factual approach is invaluable for PTAs and other parent leaders.

Who should take Ed100?

New PTA members, parents, and even students who want to have a voice in the education system should take it. Even experienced leaders can benefit from the course’s insights.

What would you say to someone who thinks they don’t need it?

Even if you’re deeply involved, you can always enhance your knowledge. Education is about continuous growth, and Ed100 supports that journey.
