Connecting legislators with their constituents' high schools

Policy decisions can have a big impact on schools, families and students, but most of us would be hard-pressed even to name our elected representatives, much less know how to connect with them. The problem runs the other way, too — legislators don't necessarily know the high schools they represent.

We decided to do something about it. This page contains three interactive maps that show the electoral boundaries of Assembly Districts, Senate Districts, and Congressional Districts in California in 2021. Each of these maps is linked to information about the high schools located within their boundaries, how to contact the principal of each school, and how to contact the representative via Twitter and/or Instagram.

Why we built this tool

We built this tool initially for the 2021 Ed100 Online Academy for Student Leaders, a free conference open to any California high school student as well as faculty members who work with student leaders. applications were accepted through June 14. More than 1,000 students applied from hundreds of high schools.

The interactive maps below were created to help legislators share information about the conference with the high school communities they represent. With a few clicks through the maps below, anyone could send email directly to the address of each school principal (based on public records as of 2020).

The Assembly

There are 80 Assembly districts in the state of California, each representing about 465,000 people. Click the map below to open a page with more information about any Assembly District, including easy links to email the principal of each high school as of 2021. To look up an Assembly representative based on a specific address try this page.

The Senate

There are 40 Senate districts in the state of California, each representing about 930,000 people. Click the map below to open a page with more information about any 2021 Senate District, including easy links to email the principal of each high school within it. To look up a Senator based on a specific address try this page.

The US Congress

There were 53 US Congressional districts in the state of California in 2021, each representing about 700,000 people. Click the map below to open a page with more information about any Congressional district, including easy links to email the principal of each high school within it. To look up a Congressional representative based on a zip code try this page.

Civic Engagement Scorecard

Principals in some areas of the state actively told high school student leaders about this conference. In other areas, they might not have heard about it. We created a Legislative District Scorecard to identify areas where many schools missed out.
